Circuit l’Ain à vélo n° 22 – And in the middle flows a river…
Description
The department of Ain owes its name to the river that cuts a chaotic path from north to south through gorges, faults and picturesque cluses... dividing the territory into two roughly equal halves.
The Ain river rises near Nozeroy (39) and forms a sort of link between the plains of Bresse and Dombes and the mountains of Bugey... History tells us that the river's name was far from unifying when it came time to name the department! Some would have preferred "Bresse" or "Bresse et Bugey". In the end, it was the Constituent Assembly that settled the debate, opting for the name "l'Ain" in January 1790.
The route follows the river and passes through the Ain gorges, in a green and calm environment.
The Ain à vélo loops are currently being modified, and new signposting will follow.
